The schedule changes slightly on each voyage depending on Cunard’s availability. Guests can expect a mixture of evening and afternoon private dances with the full big band in the Queens Room — the largest ballroom at sea. There are also more casual afternoon jam sessions with a small band in the ship’s nightclub and beside the indoor pool, as well as our late-night Pajama Party with live music in the lounge. A welcome cocktail party onboard is also included. The final schedule will be shared with guests closer to sailing. As always, Cunard reserves the right to make adjustments to the onboard schedule as necessary.
Our group dines at the second seating, as some of our private events take place earlier in the evening. We have an area of the main dining room reserved for our group, and within this area you are welcome to sit with whomever you please.Guests staying in Grills or Britannia Club accommodation are still welcome to dine in the Britannia Restaurant with the main group if they wish.Should one of our private events conflict with the ship’s dining hours, alternative dining options are available, and room service is available 24 hours a day.
Our five musical themes are:Midnight in Mayfair • European Extravagance • Rhythm in the Tropics • The Big Apple • Hollywood DreamsThe themes travel east to west with us as we make our way towards New York. Midnight in Mayfair showcases British musicians of the Jazz Age, while Hollywood Dreams celebrates music from the golden age of Hollywood — with plenty in between.Rhythm in the Tropics features rumbas and tangos and is usually a daytime event, giving guests the perfect opportunity to bring out their Palm Beach suits and other summery daywear.
Many of our guests enjoy packing a vintage-inspired wardrobe, and we certainly encourage it, but vintage clothing is not required to enjoy our events. For evening events, we suggest evening dress: black or white tie, or evening gowns. During the day, please wear whatever smart attire you find most comfortable.Queen Mary 2 also has its own dress code:View Cunard’s guide to what to wearMany of our guests choose to dress for dinner every evening, whether we have an event or not. One can never be overdressed on Queen Mary 2!
Don’t forget elegant pajamas or a smoking jacket for our late-night Pajama Party!Resort wear or bathing suits can be worn for our poolside dances, while Rhythm in the Tropics is your chance to wear a Palm Beach suit or something else summery and festive.Modern swimwear is also recommended if you would like to visit the spa or use the indoor and outdoor pools and hot tubs. Robes and slippers are provided in your cabin.
Absolutely not!Our guests come with a wonderfully wide range of interests. Some are accomplished ballroom dancers; some come primarily for the music; others for the fashion or simply to experience a glimpse of the golden age of travel. If you are interested in dancing, the ship usually offers daily dance classes. You might also consider taking a few lessons before sailing if you’d like to feel more confident on the dance floor. We do ask everyone dancing to follow the line of dance.
The orchestra plays music principally from the 1920s, 1930s and early 1940s. Expect foxtrots, swing, rumbas, waltzes, the Charleston and the occasional tango.
Not at all. We always have a number of solo travellers, and our guests are generally very welcoming and happy to ask others to dance if you’re willing to introduce yourself. The ship also provides dance hosts for its public events.
Yes. If you have a request that fits within the musical period and theme of our events — principally the 1920s, ’30s and ’40s — please contact us at least one month before sailing and we’ll be happy to discuss it.

Cunard will provide your embarkation time closer to sailing, but in general you should plan to be in Southampton by mid-morning.Queen Mary 2 usually docks early in the morning, the previous guests disembark, and new guests then board at assigned times during the early afternoon. The ship generally departs Southampton in the early evening.Read Cunard’s guide to embarkation day
Before arriving in New York, guests will be given a disembarkation time. Suitcases are normally packed and placed outside your stateroom the night before, ready for collection ashore.Alternatively, guests wishing to carry their own luggage may leave the ship after docking without waiting for their assigned luggage collection time.Read Cunard’s guide to disembarkation
This varies each year depending on the band’s schedule, but any additional events will be announced as soon as possible. Be sure to join our mailing list through the Alex Mendham & His Orchestra website to stay informed. For the 2027 voyage, we are planning an excursion to the wonderfully Art Deco Eltham Palace on 11 August — familiar to many as Linnet Ridgeway’s house in Agatha Christie’s Poirot: Death on the Nile (2004).The day includes transportation aboard a vintage London bus, a tour of the house and a picnic lunch on the lawn accompanied by music from Alex and the band, as well as a stop in Greenwich Park.On 12 August, we have arranged a two-hour walking tour of St James’s and Mayfair, tracing some 200 years of men’s tailoring through the lives of the men who commissioned, wore and made it. The tour concludes at a classic pub, where we can share a pint before setting sail the following day.
For the 2027 voyage, we have secured a group rate at the lovely five-star Rubens at the Palace.A Classic Double Room with full English breakfast is £215 per night for double occupancy or £195 per night for single occupancy. The rate is available for the night of 12 August and for additional nights before the voyage.Afternoon tea is served daily in the Palace Lounge overlooking the Royal Mews. The hotel is centrally located near Buckingham Palace and is also very convenient for Cunard’s Southampton transfers from Victoria Coach Station — approximately five minutes by taxi or ten minutes on foot. Please contact Caroline at caroline.mendham@fora.travel for booking information.
